Biography

Born in 1952 in New Orleans, Katherine Sherwood was educated at the University of California, Davis (B.A., 1975) and the San Francisco Art Institute (M.F.A., 1979). Sherwood has received numerous honors including a National Endowment for the Arts Artist Fellowship (1989); two University of California Humanities Research Grants (1992 and 1998); an Adolph and Esther Gottlieb Foundation Grant (1997); a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant (1998); a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Award (2005); and a Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant (2006). Her work has been included in numerous national and international exhibitions and is included in such notable collections as Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, University of California; Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; and San Jose Museum of Art. Sherwood is currently a professor of art at the University of California, Berkeley, a position she has held since 1989. She currently lives in Rodeo, California. (SJMA Collections Committee, 2012)
